Language of the Flowers

Many flowers are chosen for their beauty, longevity against the elements, and even smell. In some cultures, however, flowers hold meaning, representing certain emotions or conveying messages to others. Some even convey the message of "death."

On November 2nd, the Czech Republic celebrates All Souls’ Day, officially known as Památka zesnulých ("a remembrance of those who have passed") in Czech. It is more commonly known to Czech natives as “Dušičky” ("little souls"). Some compare this holiday to Halloween, but the traditions are dissimilar. Those who participate in this tradition visit the graves of family and friends to light candles, lay flowers or wreaths, and spend time with their loved ones. Children's graves are gifted with toys as well as candles and flowers.

Many of the flowers hold the meaning of reverence, fondness, death, love, and forgiveness. One common flower found frequently during this holiday is the chrysanthemum. They are commonly known as funeral flowers as they are sought after for their durability and meaning of "eternity." During All Souls ' Day, families decorate the graves with hollyhocks, lavender, gerberas, asters, pansies, and carnations. The goal is not only to honor their loved ones but also to create a grand display.

One could also find meaning behind the Czech Republic's national flower, the rose. The rose comes in various colors, representing a different meaning. According to some flower vendors in the Czech Republic, the descriptions below are what other rose colors could mean in Czech flower culture.
